CITY OF OWENSBORO RECEIVES KENTUCKY WASTE TIRE CRUMB RUBBER/TIRE DERIVED PRODUCTS GRANT FOR MORELAND PARK PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

 

The City of Owensboro is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a generous grant from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet to enhance Moreland Park’s playground facilities. This grant will be utilized to fund the installation of poured-in-place rubber playground surfacing, further enhancing safety, accessibility, and inclusivity for all park visitors.

The grant funding provided by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet’s Crumb Rubber/Tire Derived Products programs comes from the Waste Tire Trust Fund, established in 1998 by the Kentucky General Assembly to receive fees collected from new tire sales.

“This grant program promotes innovative uses for recycled tires,” said Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman. “As a result, we’re able to help grow tire recycling markets across the state, encourage proper management of waste tires, and minimize illegal dumps.”

With the support of this grant, Moreland Park will undergo significant improvements that will benefit residents of all ages and abilities. The poured-in-place rubber playground surfacing is designed to provide superior shock absorption and impact attenuation, significantly reducing the risk of injuries from falls. Its wheelchair-accessible and barrier-free design will ensure that individuals with disabilities can navigate the playground with ease, fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities for recreation.

Director of Owensboro Parks & Recreation Amanda Rogers expressed gratitude for the grant, stating, “We are deeply thankful to the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet for their support of this project. The enhancement of Moreland Park’s playground facilities aligns with our city’s commitment to providing safe, accessible, and inviting recreational spaces for all residents to enjoy.”

The playground equipment is supplied by Miracle of KY & TN. The Moreland Park playground is now closed for the new construction and the new playground is expected to be completed by the week of November 18, pending no delays or inclement weather.
